Balancing Nursing Workload by Constraint Programming

چکیده

Nursing workload in hospitals has an impact on the quality of care and on job satisfaction. Understandably there has been much recent research on improving the staffing and nurse-patient assignment decisions in increasingly realistic settings. On a version of the nursepatient assignment problem given a fixed staffing of neonatal intensive care units, constraint programming (CP) was shown to perform better than competing optimization methods. In this paper we take advantage of recent improvements to the CP approach to solve the integrated problem of staffing and nurse-patient assignment. We then consider a more difficult but also more realistic version of the problem in which patients are categorized into a small number of types and the workload associated with each type is nurse-dependent.

A Load Balancing Procedure for Parallel Constraint Programming

In this paper, we design a parallel Constraint Programming (CP) method to solve Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP). We use some attributes induced by the CP model of a CSP to improve the load balancing procedure embedded in the parallel treebased search algorithm. Load balancing is improved by using specialized branching heuristics and workload estimators based on the CP model. More precise...

Global Constraints for the Mean Absolute Deviation and the Variance: Application to the Vertical Line Balancing

Optimization with a balancing objective often appear in practical problems where humans are implied in the solution. For example, in tasks assignment problems it is a desirable property that the workload is fairly distributed among the workers. In general, a violation measure of the perfect balance can be defined as the Lp norm of the vector of variables minus their mean. Two global constraints...

Parallel-machine Scheduling with Load-balancing and Sequence-dependent Setups

In many practical manufacturing environments, setups consume a significant amount of industrial resources. Therefore, reducing setups in a non-identical parallel machine environment will significantly enhance a company’s performance level. In this thesis, the problem of minimizing total completion time with load balancing and sequence-dependent setups in a non-identical parallel machine environ...

CIP and MIQP Models for the Load Balancing Nurse-to-Patient Assignment Problem

The load balancing nurse-to-patient assignment problem requires the assignment of nurses to patients to minimize the variance of the nurses’ workload. This challenging benchmark is currently best solved exactly with constraint programming (CP) using the spread constraint and a problem-specific heuristic. We show that while the problem is naturally modelled as a mixed integer quadratic programmi...

A multi-objective mathematical model for nurse scheduling problem with hybrid DEA and augmented ε-constraint method: A case study

The efficient management of nursing personnel is of vital importance in a hospital’s environment comprising a vast share of the hospital’s operational costs. In the nurse scheduling problem (NSP), the target is to allocate shifts to the nurses in order to satisfy the hospital’s demand during the planning horizon by considering different objective functions. This paper presents a multi-objective...
